Preparing Your Garden for Winter

As the temperatures drop and the weather gets wetter, it’s not just the plants in your garden that begin to suffer! The cold, damp weather can be terrible for your garden tools, furniture, and toys. Keeping your equipment outside during the winter months can cause rusting, corrosion and mould.

From barbecues to lawnmowers to swings, taking the time to store your garden equipment is the best way to protect your belongings.

Before stashing away your garden equipment in your shed, garage or storage unit, make sure to follow our practical tips!

1. Clean and Inspect

Give your garden equipment a thorough cleaning. Remember to…

• Remove any soil, dirt or debris which could cause corrosion over time.

• Make sure your barbecue has been emptied of fuel and there are no crumbs or scraps of food inside!

• Wash any fabric seats or covers on your garden furniture according to the cleaning instructions.

• Inspect metal items for corrosion, and gently scrub away any rust with a wire brush.

• Make sure no spiders or creepy crawlies are nesting in the nooks and crannies of your equipment!

• Test electrical equipment such as lawnmowers, leaf blowers or hedge trimmers.

2. Repairs and Maintenance

After inspecting your items, address any issues you have found. It is best to make repairs before putting your belongings in storage where they could further deteriorate, and ensure they are ready to use when you unpack them in the spring.

Apply oil to metal blades, hinges and moving parts to prevent rust and keep parts in good working condition.

3.  Proper Storage

Find a dry and sheltered location to store your garden tools and furniture for the winter. Store your belongings in a garden shed, garage space, or storage unit. Avoid storing them anywhere that may become damp in the colder months to avoid rust, mould, and damage to electrics.

For garden equipment with power sources, such as lawnmowers or trimmers, follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for storage. This may include draining fuel, removing batteries, or storing the equipment in a climate controlled space.

If you have dismantled any furniture or children’s toys for storage, ensure that all the pieces are kept together for reassembly in the spring!
